No. 729,378.Patented May 26, 1903.
United States Patent Office.

Harry H. Mintzer, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, assignor of one half to Millie Emma Breisch, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Razor.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,378, dated May 26, 1903. Application filed November 6, 1902. Serial No. 130,231. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Harry H. Mintzer, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Razors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a razor which is provided with means for controlling the blade thereof when in open condition, so that it may be sharpened without liability of closing while passing over the stone, strap, &c.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a razor embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of a portion thereof. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of a portion at a right angle to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section thereof. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of a portion showing a modification.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the handle of a razor, which, excepting the feature of my invention applied thereto, is of ordinary construction. In the side pieces of said handle are the longitudinally-extending elongated slots B B, through which is passed the bolt C, the end of which is provided with the nut D, it being noticed that the head E of said bolt and the said nut D are on the exterior of the opposite pieces of the blade.

The operation is as follows: When the blade is to be opened, the nut D is loosened and the bolt moved to the end of the slots B opposite to the pivot of the blade, said slots being sufficiently long to allow the body of said bolt to occupy one end thereof, whereby the heel F of the blade is clear of said bolt, and so is not interfered with by the latter. When the blade is in open position, the bolt is moved in the slots B toward the pivot of the blade, so as to occupy a position on the back of the heel F, when the nut is tightened, thus rendering the bolt fixed, and so controlling the blade that during honing, strapping, or otherwise sharpening it cannot close, thus preventing the liability of cutting of the hand or improper action on the sharpening device.

In Fig. 5 I show a recess in a wall of one of the slots B, into which the body of the bolt C may be seated while engaged with the heel of the blade, so as to assist in firmly retaining the bolt in position on the handle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is—

1. In a razor, a handle, a longitudinally-extending slot therein adjacent to the place of occupation of the heel of the blade in the open position of the latter, a sliding bolt, the latter freely occupying said slot and extending transversely therethrough and being adapted to be moved across the back of the heel of said blade to control the same and toward one end of said slot to clear said heel.

2. In a razor, a blade, a handle, a longitudinally-extending slot in said handle, a transversely-extending bolt freely occupying said slot and adapted to be slid longitudinally over the back of the heel of the blade to control the same against closing during the operation of sharpening, and a tightening device on said bolt.

3. In a razor, a blade, a handle, a longitudinally-extending slot in said handle, a transversely-extending bolt freely occupying said slot and adapted to be slid longitudinally over the back of the heel of the blade to control the same against closing during the sharpening operation and to be moved to one end of said slot to clear said heel.

4. In a razor, a blade, a handle having an elongated slot, a bolt occupying said slot and adapted to slide therein in the longitudinal direction of the handle, and means for tightening said bolt in adjusted position.

5. In a razor, a blade, a handle having a slot therein, a sliding bolt in said slot adapted to engage the back of the heel of said blade and control the same against closing and a tightening-nut on said bolt.

6. In a razor, a blade, a handle having a longitudinally-extending slot therein and a sliding bolt movable in said slot and adapted to engage with the heel of said blade, said slot having in its wall a recess adapted to receive the body of said bolt.

Harry H. Mintzer.
